The following chapters are created by Walter and Manfred. With “We” are we both meant.
1 day, 09.06., Sa
Manfred has arrived in Taipe. Our first reunion was a bit surreal.
We stayed only for a short time in Taipei and went by train to Hualien, where we wanted to start our trip from.
2 day, 10.06., So
We’ve planned to drive around complete Taiwan with a Scooter, for what we’ve calculated 7 days. The Renting of the Scooters was easier than anticipated. Cash and License on the table and we’ve had’em. It was the first time for Manfred on a Scooter so we did some exercises in a car park, at the same time we’ve noticed that one of the scooters was loosing oil. No Problem, we’ve got a brandnew scooter from the rent company. We haven’t spared it in no way and chased it the same day up into the tarako mountains. The Scooters had 125 ccm and a maximum speed of 100 km/h, therefore enough power to master also longer distances without any problems.
Today we’ve spend our night in a catholice hostel. We planed for that night to visit the hot springs nearby. Weaponed with flashlight and towel we went away to search the hot water. After an odyssey and an unsuccesfull turn in the wood, we met a taiwanese man, who told us, that the hot springs had been closed a time ago, because some tourists had been killed by falling stones during the swimming process. So in the End we’ve been quit happy, that we couldn’t find these hots springs.
3 day, 11.06., Mo
This day was overshadowed with Clouds. And Rain. And Coldness. And Wind. It wasn’t very pleasing with the scooters…
Somewhere in 2000 meters height we’ve stoped at a pitstop to wear everything we had. We used socks as gloves and towels as kidney protection. Later on we’ve bought real gloves.
Our todays stage target was the Sun-Moon-Lake. It’s the biggest water in Taiwan in a height of 1700 meter. Because our yesterdays “hot spring project” had been a failure, we’ve decided today to swim in the lake. We creeped on a camping site, which was nearby the “beach” and had to pass by sleeping dogs. We couldn’t see anything, cause we’ve forgotten our flashlights. That was stupid.
The nearer we came to water, the more we sank into the mud. In the End we had to abort our mission “swimming in’da cold lake” so we went totally stained back to our scooters.
On our way back we’ve got lost and arrived two hours later at the hostel.
4 day, 12.06., Di
Day 4 teached us again, that shortcuts are not everytime really shortcuts. Instead as planned to arrive at the beach on the westcoast, we found us again in a isolated mountain village. We’ve had an interesting insight into the taiwanese farmer culture.
We’ve had to change our travel route, because of rain and rockfall, and couldn’t cross the mountain. We’ve driven intstead along the westcoast forward to the south.
This night we’ve slept in a horror house. The owners looked a bit freakish and the facility looked like it hasn’t changed for 50 years...

After that we checked in and checked out the nightlife of Kenting. (Kenting is the mallorca of Taiwan)
On this Wednesday we made a mistake. Of some Reason we’ve assumed that we’ve already the 15. of June and we thought we had to give back the scooter the day after tomorrow.
Cause of that matter, we’ve stepped on gas this day, so we would arrive in Hualien in time. We wanted to cross again the mountains, and mastered indeed 2500 meters level.
This night we’ve saved our money and slept in the jungle under the stars.
First thing in the morning we’ve noticed that we slept beside an anthill… We’ve had a lot of bite wounds on our hands. The nice woman who prepared our morning meal provided us with a Taiwanese healing oil, which wasn’t useful.
Still not enough with injuries and hurting. Manfred’s got to know the Taiwanese grass today. He was biting in it. Reason was the wet street. After a double flip, the scooter had a bended Steer and Manfred’s finger broken. On the picture you can see his trajectory.

We had to give the Scooter to a workshop and spent the night in a Hot Spring Resort. Finally we could relaxe in the Hot Water!
Orchid (34) gave us company. She comes every day to the hot springs. She has no children and lives still with her parents. With 18 years she fell in love with a catholic priest. Because of the Celibacy, the relationship had no future. They’ve been together for 10 Years, before the breakup. Orchid writes now for 6 years on a book to process this experience and wants to publish it this year.
Luckily the repairing of the scooter has been very cheap (40EU). After we’ve cleaned them we drove directly back to Hualien and gave the scooters back.
Arrived in Taipei, we uploaded our pictures to the pc when we finally realized that we’ve been calculating one day to less and we’ve given the scooter back to early.
We were very happy to win one more day…
Impressions
Scooter/Infrastruktur
- Streets are very good
- Perfect for biking
Landscape/nature
Varied landscape, a lot of insects, beach, mountains, national parks
People
All people have been very friendly to us. We never had the feeling that they wanna rip us off. They are honest. Although Taiwan “belongs” to China (like a lost brother), there are big differences between those two countries
